What is Cent Sign ¢?
The cent symbol (¢) represents a small unit of currency, often equal to ¹⁄₁₀₀ of a significant currency, like the dollar or euro. It is used in various countries, including the U.S. and Europe. The symbol is a variation of the Latin letter “C,” with a vertical line through it.
The word “cent” comes from the Latin “centum,” meaning “hundred.” This reflects its value as one-hundredth of the basic monetary unit. For example, one cent is 0.01 dollars or euros.
In some countries, like South Africa and Ireland, only the letter “c” is used instead of the symbol ¢. The cent sign is usually placed after the number, like 3¢ or $0.03 in the U.S. or 3c and €0.03 in Europe.
